SNORING AND SLEEP APNOEA The elders will remember for long the scene of the "Grande Vadrouille ", with Bourvil and Louis de Funès, in which one can see a German officer somewhat "plumped » and sleeping in the same bed as Louis de Funès !!
The officer snors terribly and prevents his neighbour from sleeping: from time to time, his respiration stops and gets back suddenly and very loudly, emitting a roar which frightens his sickly neighbour !!
The reality is often less funny!
Snoring and sleep apnoea, in their extreme form, may be so annoying that the couple's life may be at stake, and that the patient's life is sometimes to blame!!
What is it? Respiratory problems affecting one quarter of the adult population (snoring) and around 4 % of this population for sleep apnoea !
The origin is the same: the partial or complete obstruction of the superior air ducts in the Pharynx 's region.
This obstruction of the rear-throat accelerates the air passage in a narrowed duct: flexible tissues (soft palate, uvula) enters in vibration and this is Snoring !
When aging or putting on weight, snoring will lead to a more severe form: obstructive sleep apnoea (Pickwickian syndrome). There are other much rarer forms of apnoea which cannot be detailed here, due to lack of space.
The Merck manual thus defines apnoea : »Potentially mortal group of disorders resulting in recurrent respiratory halts during sleep, of a sufficiently long duration to produce a measurable blood deoxygenation, or by halts of 10 sec or more which occurs less than 30 times per night.
Sleep apnoea has rapid consequences :
Somnolence
Wake up fatigue
Depressive states
Lack of physical and mental tonic
In the long run: risk of Hypertension
Cardio-vascular problems
Losing weight
Avoid alcoholic drinks before going to bed,
Have physical activities in relation to ones constitution and age
Sleep on the side or on the belly
Raise up the head
If you have amalgams in the mouth or you have them removed, it is good to make a mercury search in the saliva ( See our article on dental amalgams ).Mercury, in fact, modify the rate of mucin saliva and can overload the rear - throat during sleep!
On the other hand, we are working for years on intra -buccal devices which avoid the decline of the mandible, while sleeping on the back.
This retro-movement of the mandible at night reduces the air passage and causes snoring, and later, sleep apnoea, even among persons not suffering from excess weight !
